It is with deep gratitude that I avail myself of this opportunity to express my thankfulness to God for Christian Science, for Mrs. Eddy, and for the practitioner who so lovingly helped me.

When still young in Christian Science, I was accidentally shot. The bullet passed through one of my eyes, leaving me blind in that eye. I immediately declared the truth and repeatedly pondered the Bible passage. "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it nor any thing taken from it." The person responsible for the accident wanted me to go directly to a doctor. I informed him I already had my physician and that "what God cannot do, man need not attempt" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 231). This did not satisfy him, and his persistence became so great that I told him I would see what a doctor might have to say. Two X rays were taken. I was told that there was a very bad hemorrhage and that I should see a capable eye specialist as soon as possible, since the other eye might be affected.

The next day I left for home, a distance of four hundred miles, and went directly to a Christian Science practitioner, who expressed her willingness to take up the work for me. However, I went first to an eye specialist, who said that he could guarantee nothing, and that it would be necessary to have many X ray pictures taken before doing any operating.
