Christian Science found me at...
Christian Science found me at the close of thelast war very discontented with life and religion. My husband was out in the East, and I was left with two small children. I grasped at Christian Science when it was offered, although I knew little about it. Although I accepted it in theory I was not so ready to put it into practice, and progress was slow. However, I knew it was the truth, and over a period of many years I have been able to prove it in my daily experience and in the bringing up of four children. At the birth of the two youngest children I was able with the help of a faithful practitioner to free myself from many of the beliefs attached to this experience. All four have had the privilege of regular attendance at Sunday school, and have become members of The Mother Church.
After the birth of a son, I learned the child was under great bondage, and much earnest work on my part and by practitioners was needed to free him from this burden. I am grateful for the progress I myself made during this period. One healing, which took place when he was just a toddler, stands out clearly. While he was playing in the garden I heard screams, and on carrying him indoors I found that a prong of a garden fork had pierced his foot, leaving an ugly mark. We sang "Mother's Evening Prayer" by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy (Poems, pp. 4, 5), and soon the tears ceased. I then bathed the foot and he followed me to the telephone, as I called a practitioner for help in correcting thoughts of reversal and fear. The help was at once given and the healing was complete and permanent.
I am deeply conscious of what we owe our Leader, who has provided so many activities through which we may progress, thereby not only blessing our own small circle, but all mankind. For the constant unfolding of good following class instruction I am most happy. I realize more than ever that Christian Science must be first and all in one's life. During the past three years, in which I have had the privilege of serving as First Reader in a branch church, I have found strength and joy in the realization and proof of God's support. Our services were carried on during raids, and in complete trust in God as ever-present Love I found poise and protection. Often I cycled to and from church while planes battled overhead and there was machine-gun fire all around me.
