For a number of years prior to the summer of 1907 I had been engaged in the hotel, pool hall, and billiard business in the Middle West. The work was confining and the hours were long. I finally became ill with a nervous condition. I went to a doctor, who said he would give me some medicine that would heal me and make me a new man. I took this medicine faithfully for six or eight months, without receiving any benefit. When I went to him and told him I felt no better he said: "Medicine has lost all power over you. You will have to quit business and travel." I mentioned California and he replied, "That is just what you need."

When I arrived in Los Angeles I called upon an aunt who had been an invalid for several years. I found her well and happy, and learned her whole family had taken up the study of Christian Science. They had all been benefited by it, and my aunt had been healed when the doctors had failed to effect a cure. She told me that Christian Science would heal anyone if he studied it and put it into practice.

I decided to begin its study, and was loaned a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for a few days. When I returned it my aunt gave me the address of a Christian Science Reading Room and of a practitioner. I visited the Reading Room every day for a week, and then went to see the practitioner. When she learned I was taking medicine, she told me that a practitioner does not give Christian Science treatment to one who is taking medicine, and asked me to give it up. I was so surprised I did not answer her. She asked me again, "Will you give up medicine?"
