The Thank Offering of Testimonies

[Original Article in German]

Every Wednesday evening in Christian Science churches all over the world testimonies of healing are given and gratitude is expressed for blessings received. The importance of these testimony meetings cannot be too highly estimated. Both to Christian Scientists and to the many visitors who attend, these meetings furnish new hope and strength. There we hear practical illustrations of the successful solution of the various problems which present themselves in human experience. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 241) our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "The error of the ages is preaching without practice." To those seeking help, these meetings are encouraging, and the testimonies of healing convince the seeker that this religion is practical and its teachings demonstrable.

There are comparatively few who have taken up Christian Science solely for the love of good, from purely idealistic motives or because they at once recognized that the absolute truth about God and man is the basis of its teachings. Many grow gradually in the understanding of this Science through the help and good example of friends. Perhaps others are driven to this Science because of a physical or mental ill. In the shelter of the testimony meetings all may find that "the eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."

The attention of the public is not held by reason of forceful assertion or oratory. Rather is it the testimony which pours forth from a grateful heart that is most acceptable, for Mrs. Eddy says (Church Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 24): "More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, 'who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalms 103:3)."
