I am writing this testimony...

I am writing this testimony with the hope that it may encourage someone.

I had been troubled almost continuously since childhood with a serious stomach and bowel disorder, sick headaches, nervousness, and insomnia, supposedly inherited, from which no relief was to be expected. I had lost faith in all material remedies, and in anything of a religious nature. The last physician who examined me had advised me to arrange my affairs at once, because I had but a short time to live.

I had been asked to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but I could see no use in reading a book. After making several unkind remarks about a book I knew nothing of, I began reading it one evening, being very careful that no one saw me. When my eyes fell upon the following statement from the Preface (p vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," I knew that I had found a way out of my difficulties. I continued to read, pondering each statement carefully until I reached the first sentence in the chapter on Prayer (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God.—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." I have never forgotten it.
