Obedience

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

Pupils in the Christian Science Sunday School are taught that only through obedience to God's laws can perfect harmony be maintained. Much of the discord one experiences is the result of disobedience to some moral or spiritual law, or to the civil laws of the community or state. Before one can be fully obedient to a law, he must know and understand it.

One of the dictionary definitions of "obedience" is, "Compliance with that which is required by authority" (Webster). God, the one Mind, is the only divine authority, and one is obedient to Him in so far as he expresses God in all of his activities. Obedience to the law of Love eliminates self-will, stubbornness, resentment, selfishness, envy, and hate. As one sees his fellow man, in the light of Christian Science, as the perfect idea of our Father-Mother God, all sense of rivalry, jealousy, and hate will be destroyed.

Young men and women entering the armed services of their country are taught that strict obedience to their superior officers is one of the first rules of military discipline, and that any refusal to obey an order usually results in severe punishment of the offender.
