Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Australian Capital Territory

The press has been friendly to Christian Scientists. During the year an offer was made to the editor of our local newspaper of a free subscription to The Christian Science Monitor on the "subscription in exchange for advertising plan," with the result that our newspaper is now advertised periodically in the Canberra Times. Quotations from the Monitor have appeared from time to time, credit being given to our newspaper in each case.

The Committee on Publication has been in touch with the National Library in Canberra. It had been noticed that no work on Christian Science, friendly or otherwise, was to be observed on the shelves of that portion that is open to the public. A visit to the librarian disclosed that it was customary to place the "latest" book on any subject for use by the public on the shelves for a period, and then move it on in order to make room for a new book on the subject. A request for a list of books on Christian Science held by the library revealed the possession of two of Mrs. Eddy's books, namely, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," and three other works referring to Christian Science by other authors. Since no biography of Mrs. Eddy's life was held by the library, an offer was made by one of our members to present a copy of Dr. Powell's "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait." This was accepted by the assistant librarian.
