"Humility is the stepping-stone...

"Humility is the stepping-stone to a higher recognition of Deity. The mounting sense gathers fresh forms and strange fire from the ashes of dissolving self, and drops the world," says Mrs. Eddy on page 1 of her work, "Miscellaneous Writings." The truth of these beautiful words came to me while I was searching for freedom from a false sense of self, a sense of pride or shame in material background and prestige.

I have witnessed and experienced many wonderful healings in Christian Science, for which I am deeply grateful to God, but the healing of pride and a false sense of self is most wonderful to me since it freed me from the fear of other people's judgment of me and mine. This belief was an impostor for a long time, coloring my thinking, my motives and acts ever so subtly.

While away at school I experienced a healing of blood poisoning after my foot and leg had swelled to almost twice their normal size. I was in such great pain that I could not think sufficiently clearly to work for myself, so I telephoned to my home, eighty miles away, and notified my parents, who at once called a Christian Science practitioner. Twenty minutes after I hung up the receiver the pain had ceased, and in an hour the swelling had vanished.
