"The Lord God omnipotent reigneth"

In the warfare that appears to go on between good and evil the close observer notes that the former seems to have to be on the defensive much of the time, and that quite often evil boasts itself to be the stronger. Also, in pressing its false claims for recognition as a power, evil is subtle and crafty. It appears to mesmerize vast numbers of people, so that they become unwitting tools in the hands of individuals who, for selfish purposes, engage themselves to carry out evil's designs.

Quite frequently wonderment is expressed because of the power with which evil seems to be invested; and the questions recur: "If God is omnipotent, why does He allow evil to do so much harm? Why does He even countenance its existence?"

Christian Science declares that God is indeed omnipotent, the only creator, and also that His entire creation is good, very good, as the Bible states. Evil, then, has no true existence. Christian Science shows it to be entirely fallacious. It seems to be real only to false material sense. With Unequivocal directness Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," states the case of evil in these words (p. 470): "If God, or good, is real, then evil, the unlikeness of God is unreal. And evil can only seem to be real by giving reality to the unreal."
