"The hearing ear, and the seeing eye"
In Proverbs it is written, "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." This passage of Scripture has often been construed to mean that the so-called material senses of sight and hearing are produced by God since He is supposed to have made all that the material senses comprehend. When, however, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, gave to the world her textbook on Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," a more spiritual and enlightened interpretation of the Scriptures was gained by those who studied her teachings faithfully, and who thereby were able to approach them understandingly.
On page 123 of the textbook Mrs. Eddy writes, "Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." If in accordance with the spirit of this quotation, we understandingly replace the objects of material sense, namely, the material ear and eye, with spiritual ideas, the meaning that the writer evidently intended to convey is clear.
We read in I Kings that when in a dream the Lord appeared to Solomon and asked him what gift He should give him, the king asked for "an understanding heart" in order that he might be a wise and just ruler of his people. Small wonder that in later years wise men were able to perceive "the hearing ear, and the seeing eye." as symbols of an understanding heart which can only originate in God and be bestowed by Him. It is this "understanding heart" which all true and sincere students of Christian Science seek to gain in order to obey the behest of their Leader to heal the sick and overcome sin through spiritual perception and understanding.
