My first opportunity to learn of...
My first opportunity to learn of Christian Science came when I was about twelve years of age. The doctor claimed I was suffering from tuberculosis and dropsy, and had given me about a week to live. My mother, feeling very helpless under these conditions, decided to take me to a large city where she could consult some specialists. Against the advice of the physician we started out on this journey, but were unable to complete it. The conductor of the train ordered me taken from the train. This unexpected change in our plans was very discouraging, but the result of this change is what makes this testimony possible.
I was taken to the home of a Christian Scientist, and she, seeing my great need of healing, lovingly told me about God as "a very present help in trouble." Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 166): "To ignore God as of little use in sickness is a mistake. Instead of thrusting Him aside in times of bodily trouble, and waiting for the hour of strength in which to acknowledge Him, we should learn that He can do all things for us in sickness as in health." With the consent of my mother, a Christian Science practitioner was called, and an instantaneous healing resulted.
My family and I have proved many times the help afforded us by right thinking. At one time my small daughter had her fingers wedged in the car door, which had been closed with great force. It took some time to open the door. I immediately knew God's omnipotence and love were present. When the hand was released from the door, not even the skin was broken on the fingers. The incident occurred as we were starting on a five-hundred-mile trip. We rejoiced all the way for this added proof of God's care.
