Efficiency

Christian Science is a practical religion, which can be utilized in every detail of our daily life. It is the truth of being, and gives to its students the true idea about everything that is real and right. This being so it gives us the right concept of efficiency, whereby we can accomplish every righteous task, perform every duty faithfully, and attain every worthy end.

The word "efficiency" means "the capacity to produce desired results; characterized by effective activity." For activity to be truly effective, we must look beyond the human to the divine, from the finite to the infinite, from the imperfect to the perfect. Mere human effort, based on human will and so-called self-sufficiency, often results in failure, frustration, and disappointment. Effort based on divine strength, unerring wisdom, and spiritual power knows no failure or defeat. The Bible gives us the basis of all true efficiency and ability in that helpful statement. "It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect."

Christian Science teaches us that God is divine Mind, and points out that "the 'divine ear' is not an auditory nerve. It is the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is always known and by whom it will be supplied" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 7). It always shows forth the supreme activity of this one infinite Mind. It sets forth clearly that man is "the compound idea of infinite Spirit: the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind" (ibid., p. 591). Man then represents this all-knowing Mind in wisdom and divine intelligence. This Mind capacitates its representative man, to know what is the right thing to do the right way to do it and the most helpful way to do it. This all-knowing Mind is everywhere present, and man can turn to this Mind for guidance, direction, and unfailing support.
