Sanctuary

[Lines written after visiting the little house in Lynn, Massachusetts, where the writing of Science and Health was completed]

Let me pause here beside this open door
While gratitude floods swiftly through my heart:
This is the little room that welcomed her,
This the still place in which her thoughts found strength—
A humble spot, a tiny "closet"—where
That one whose heart went out to all mankind
Could ponder God's dear love and tender care.
This was the quiet place that sheltered her.
Here she could work—
God's tireless, faithful scribe—
Here she could "search the scriptures." find the "key"
That was to make unnumbered thousands wise.

We, who tread humbly God's full-charted way
Along whose rugged course her brave feet pressed,
Gaze on this place of holy happenings
With hearts aglow with joyful tenderness.
So sweet, so humble, is this restful spot
That all the hours of struggle are forgot:
Only the triumph lingers as we see
This quiet room where she gained victory.
