The Simplicity of the Method

On page 7 of "Unity of Good" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "When I have most clearly seen and most sensibly felt that the infinite recognizes no disease, this has not separated me from God, but has so bound me to Him as to enable me instantaneously to heal a cancer which had eaten its way to the jugular vein." On page 67 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy tells us that "grace and Truth are potent beyond all other means and methods." These and other statements throughout her writings eliminate entirely from thought any belief that metaphysical healing need be difficult, or that it is in any sense mystical or abstruse.

Jesus, the matchless Metaphysician, must have recognized his demonstration of Life eternal as both his opportunity and his obligation. Indeed, he knew that his doctrine must remain a power among men, even though he were no longer personally present to prosper it.

Lovingly he turned to his disciples. Here, indeed, was to be their opportunity. Had not he, by precept and example, taught them the things of God? They knew the soundness of his doctrine, having in many instances witnessed to his great works. As beneficiaries of Jesus' teachings, they had become the benefactors of their less fortunate brethren. Thus, it was both beautiful and natural for Jesus to demand that they carry on his work. Theirs was to be a trusteeship transcending in importance any similar responsibility known to man.
