Words become inadequate to...

Words become inadequate to express my joyful and sincere gratitude to God for the many blessings that have been unfolded to me through applying the rules of Christian Science.

I was brought up in Christian Science, and have found many times that Truth does indeed sustain one, never failing to overcome all manner of evil. Six years ago, while sitting in one of my college classes, I was suddenly seized with a pain in my side so severe that it seemed for several seconds that I should lose all sense of my surroundings. As soon as my thought cleared I immediately began to repeat "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468), and several minutes later I was able to rise from my chair and excuse myself. I did not see how it would be possible for me to walk the half-mile to the home in which I was rooming. However, there was no available transportation and I had no alternative. My steps were slow, and I had walked only a short distance when the pain again became so severe that I was forced to sit down. I clung steadfastly to the truth that man lives, moves, and has his being in God, and was soon able to continue on my way, although with much pain. After reaching my room I immediately called long distance to the home of my parents and had my mother call a Christian Science practitioner. The next morning the pain had subsided, but I remained in bed another day, and on the third day resumed my studies at school. Three weeks later, however. I was again seized with a severe pain, and, although it was met and overcome, afterwards I had these attacks every three or four weeks. By mid-term I had lost over twenty pounds in weight, and had given up the thought of continuing my college work.

I returned home very much discouraged and could not help wondering why I had not been healed. However, I devoted every available moment to the study of Truth and its divine rules, praying without ceasing and knowing "that all things work together for good to them that love God." One day, after spending approximately seven months in consecrated study without realizing a complete healing, I was again attacked by pain that was more severe than ever. I became fearful, discouraged, and full of self-pity. While lying on my bed in this state of mind, trying to forget self, trying to say in all sincerity, "Not my will, but thine, be done," I suddenly underwent a state of mental chemicalization, and, oh, so clearly did a voice say unto me (Poems, by Mrs. Eddy, p. 4), "'Lo, I am with you alway,'—watch and pray." A wonderful sense of freedom, peace, and oneness with the Father came to me. I was healed instantaneously, and my joy knew no bounds. Truly have I realized the Scripture, "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us," and the lines Mrs. Eddy quotes from Paul with her spiritual interpretation on page 325 of Science and Health: "'When Christ, who is our life, shall appear [be manifested], then shall ye also appear [be manifested ] with him in glory.'" And Mrs. Eddy continues, "When spiritual being is understood in all its perfection, continuity, and might, then shall man be found in God's image."
