Signs of the Times
International Friendship
Francis B. Sayre, United State High Commissioner of the Philippine Islands
The New York Times
We are fighting not merely to win a struggle, but to establish a world where our children can live in peace and security under law. We can have such a world only if we find the way to build a peace that will be lasting. That is as difficult a job as the winning of the war. It also is as necessary if we are to obtain the objectives for which we are fighting. If we lose the peace, our military victory will turn to dust and ashes.
To win the war and to win the peace that follows we must unite the peoples of the world by a clear-cut program, based upon human brotherhood. No other kind of program will rally and sustain our forces. We must make it clear that the peoples of the United Nations are fighting not merely for American rights or English rights or Russian rights or Chinese rights, but for the rights of all mankind.
