Sunday School Notes and Comments

The vital question concerning the important topic of teaching the Lesson-Sermon is, How shall such a vast subject be taught?

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has not left the answer to human planning. God revealed to her the way to teach the Lesson-Sermon and she has made His plan clear in the Church Manual. Article XX. Section 2, on "Teaching the Children," which says. "The Sabbath School children shall be taught the Scriptures, and they shall be instructed according to their understanding or ability to grasp the simpler meanings of the divine Principle that they are taught." In other words, she enjoins that the children shall be taught the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures. Here is a special warning against merely reading the Lesson over in the class or teaching only the history or geography of the Bible.

Further light from our Leader on teaching the Lesson-Sermon to juvenile classes shines out in Section 3 of Article XX. After naming the first lessons for the little children, the By-Law says. "The next lessons consist of such questions and answers as are adapted to a juvenile class, and may be found in the Christian Science Quarterly Lessons." The teaching, then, of the Lesson-Sermon in the Sunday school shall consist of questions and answers.
