Sunday School Notes and Comments

The vital question concerning the important topic of teaching the Lesson-Sermon is, How shall such a vast subject be taught?

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has not left the answer to human planning. God revealed to her the way to teach the Lesson-Sermon and she has made His plan clear in the Church Manual. Article XX. Section 2, on "Teaching the Children," which says. "The Sabbath School children shall be taught the Scriptures, and they shall be instructed according to their understanding or ability to grasp the simpler meanings of the divine Principle that they are taught." In other words, she enjoins that the children shall be taught the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures. Here is a special warning against merely reading the Lesson over in the class or teaching only the history or geography of the Bible.

Further light from our Leader on teaching the Lesson-Sermon to juvenile classes shines out in Section 3 of Article XX. After naming the first lessons for the little children, the By-Law says. "The next lessons consist of such questions and answers as are adapted to a juvenile class, and may be found in the Christian Science Quarterly Lessons." The teaching, then, of the Lesson-Sermon in the Sunday school shall consist of questions and answers.

The teaching by questions and answers in accordance with the By-Laws, brings out the correlation between the Bible and Science and Health. The illuminations of Science shed upon the Scriptural passages reveal their scientific sense, which begets such inspiration and revelation that healing follows.

Never having attended any Sunday school herself, and not having had much contact with children, one teacher felt rather at a loss over teaching in the Christian Science Sunday School. She prayed much and fervently the week before her first experience of teaching. Consequently the hour was a happy one and passed harmoniously. The pupils were dear and receptive, and it seemed difficult to understand why the teacher had been told that teaching small children is not an easy task.

The seventeenth chapter of John was a great help in seeing the children as God's children and God as their true teacher.
