The First Beautitude
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven."—Matthew 5:3.
No comfort and no rest relieve the proud,
By worldly care and competition bowed,
But to the poor in spirit comes the joy
Of humble hearts reserved for Love's employ.
As Mary bathed in tears the Master's feet
And found redemption in his pardon sweet,
So may the truly penitent achieve
Self-reformation, and no longer grieve.
All of content, all pure, undreamed-of calm,
Truth in its fullness and its healing balm—
This is the heritage of those who love,
Those who by deeds their Christly motive prove.
