"The divine energy of Spirit"
In Isaiah we read, "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Thus does the prophet admonish us to acknowledge God, divine Mind, as the source of endurance and strength.
According to human belief, strenuous activity, mental or physical, may be attended by depleted energies, and the individual, as a consequence, may require a period of sleep, recuperation, or refreshment for the regaining of these energies. Christian Scientists take, to the extent that seems individually necessary, certain hours of repose. However, in the degree we realize that God is actively and constantly expressing Himself, and that His idea, man, manifests spiritual qualities, which can neither wear out nor be depleted, we shall progress in overcoming the general belief of fatigue.
A dictionary definition of "energy" is "habitual tendency to and readiness for effective action." Certainly an understanding of Christian Science equips us for "effective action" in every right endeavor, and destroys fear of untoward consequences. Recognizing the source of true energy and unlabored action to be God, divine Love, one need not feel restricted or at a disadvantage if, in discharging his duties under regular or even unusual conditions fewer hours of repose and more hours of work may be required. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 249). "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy;" also (ibid., p. 218). "The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness."
