"On upward wing"

A Ship plowed steadily through a heavy swell. A storm was approaching, and the sea was rising as if it sensed the coming gale. Circling around the vessel were three large sea birds—members of the albatross family. With symmetry and grace they skimmed the waves or soared above them with unlabored energy. They had their wings, and using them aright had nothing to fear from dashing waves or encircling sea. One who watched the flight of the albatross observed that it was not just the possession of wings, but the right use of them, which really counted.
Today many thousands of young airmen, emerging successfully from a prescribed training period, are given their wings. They, like the birds, skim over the waves or soar to the skies in what is to them a new experience.
