My Unafflicted Brother

The material, evil, mind often argues to us that because some relative, friend, or neighbor is afflicted or sick, we too may become so conditioned. To illustrate:

A student of Christian Science visited relatives who were not Christian Scientists. On arrival she found one relative manifesting an unsightly gland malady. She was told that certain other of her relatives were likewise afflicted. The unpleasant picture impressed itself on her thought. She began to fear that she too might be so affected. Error whispered, If they can be so afflicted, you might be— and she listened to the lying serpent. Symptoms soon appeared. The truth of Mary Baker Eddy's statement in "'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 153) was proved: "We weep because others weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but mortal mind, not matter, contains and carries the infection."

Shortly afterward she returned home and called a Christian Science practitioner for help. The condition was quickly healed. The practitioner realized that never had this, or any affliction, existed in the infinitude of God's universe, nor had any of God's children ever been so conditioned. The error, being a baseless lie, without identity, could not become a condition of one or any of God's children. The practitioner knew that no mental contagion exists in the universe which is Mind's manifestation, or between any of its ideas. Every individual idea is perpetually conditioned by God alone. There is no other cause to condition identity. Mortals, healthy or afflicted, are not the children of God, and error cannot leap from the belief of identified mortality to spiritual man.
