Science, Law, and Punishment

If one asks an uneducated child for the sum of two and two there is no reason why he should not say four, but he may say five or six, and he may say, "I do not know."

Ask a mortal what is life and he will tell you what he believes about it, but his answer may be no more intelligent than that of the uninformed child.

Educate the child in arithmetic and he will become able to answer correctly. Educate a mortal in the material ologies, and it is more and more likely that he will say, "I do not know what life is."
