When our baby was about four...
When our baby was about four months old he was suddenly taken ill. Having already called our family physician, we also called two other doctors for consultation. They agreed that the child should be sent to a state hospital in another city as a last resort. We took the child to this hospital, but he continued to have severe convulsions without interruption. There were at least ten doctors on the case, including several specialists. They all agreed that they had never seen such a severe case of convulsions.
After the child's food formula had been changed many times, and many other experiments had been made, including spinal punctures and two operations, the child continued to grow steadily worse, and he was removed to another hospital. Finally we were told by the doctors that there was nothing more that could be done for our child. They also said that he had sleeping sickness and rickets, was totally blind, and that his bowels were paralyzed, and they gave us! no hope that he could live.
In those blackest hours of my life, when I was in great despair and hopelessness, my father handed me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I took the book and began reading the first chapter, on Prayer. While reading it I began to realize that I was being divinely led to the truth that I had been longing for all my life. It was my only hope for the child, and I called upon a Christian Science practitioner for help.
Upon her advice we took the child home from the hospital, and he began to improve at once. For five days the practitioner or a loving Scientist was with us day and night. By that time a Christian Science nurse came and stayed with us for about three months. She understood everything necessary in the care of babies, and I shall always be grateful for the many things she taught me. After she left, the practitioner's daughter came for a few hours each day to help me, until my understanding in the truth was strong enough to permit me to go along alone.
The convulsions lessened and finally disappeared. The bowels moved normally, sight was restored, and the other laws of mortal mind which had been laid down for the child were overcome. Although the healing was slow, the improvement was steady, and today he is entirely normal.
At this time I experienced a healing of depression, mental darkness, and intermittent nervousness from which I had suffered for several years.
My husband and I can never express in mere words the gratitude that is in our hearts for this marvelous healing of our son, and for the many other blessings and healings, which are more than can be numbered.
We are grateful to Mrs. Eddy for revealing this wonderful truth which has set us free. I am grateful to the practitioner and to the nurses for their faithful work, and also to my parents and the loving friends who encouraged and helped me on my way to this healing.
My husband and I are grateful that our Leader made provision for the privilege of church membership.—(Mrs.) Doris Mills, Clinton, Iowa.
