When I first came to Christian Science...
When I first came to Christian Science I weighed ninety-six pounds. Having four children, all under ten years of age, I naturally was desirous of living. For many years we changed from one doctor to another. Their methods included massaging, electric treatments, and all sorts of injections, all without results. Finally one doctor, after saying there was no cure for pernicious anemia with complications, said: "I have tried everything I know. Why don't you try Christian Science?"
A friend told me something of Christian Science, and took me to church. I then borrowed Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and earnestly studied all of her books. By reading and studying our Leader's writings, I was healed within a month of hemorrhoids, and later of hemorrhages. In six months I had gained ten pounds. For several years I could not walk any distance, and this gave me the opportunity to study. Later I called on several practitioners, but received little help, until one day I went to one who explained this Science so thoroughly to me that, as I watched my thoughts and prayed for unfoldment, I became stronger and was healed.
On page 376 of our textbook Mrs. Eddy says, "The pallid invalid, whom, you declare to be wasting away with consumption of the blood, should be told that blood never gave life and can never take it away,—that Life is Spirit, and that there is more life and immortality in one good motive and act than in all the blood which ever flowed through mortal veins and simulated a corporeal sense of life." The understanding of this passage, and of "A Rule for Motives and Acts" in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 1). assisted in bringing about my healing.
