I have been an active member...
I have been an active member of The Mother Church and of a branch church for several years. The giving of testimonies has come from a heart full of gratitude for the multitude of blessings that have helped me prove that "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword." These words from Hymn No. 250 in the Christian Science Hymnal have helped many times:
Our gratitude is riches,
Complaint is poverty,
Our trials bloom in blessings,
They test our constancy.
In the Bible we read from Isaiah, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." These words came from the "still small voice" when to human sense all was turmoil around me. The passing on of a loved one had left me with two children who had not completed their education, and I had no home or means of providing for them or myself. By trusting in God as Truth and Love, I maintained peace all through the experience.
I very much desired a certain line of employment, for I believed it would meet the need of all concerned. The human footsteps that were taken in search of the needed employment, however, met with failure. During a period of rest that I was taking at a camp several miles from town, a city paper was handed me, and in it I found the kind of advertisement for which I had been searching, a so-called "blind ad" with only a number for identification. During the following night I was awakened, and the words to answer this advertisement came very clearly. On my return to town the next day, the expected call came. An interview was arranged over the telephone, and when I kept it I found a friend, who is a good student of Christian Science. In three days the children and I were established in our new surroundings, and the desired employment was started, although I had had no previous experience in this line of work.
The individual who advertised had more than one hundred letters to choose from, and the thought was expressed that surely one of them at least would be from a student of Christian Science. The letters were divided into three piles, and carefully read by three people. The one for which they were looking was not found. Divine Mind led one of the three to go over the discarded letters, and in one of them she found the answer for which she had been looking. The letter reminded her of an experience of her own in which patience had been expressed under trying conditions.
In the two years of working out our problems in obedience to the one Mind, God a very profitable and harmonious atmosphere prevailed. As we put into daily use the truths we learn in the study of Christian Science, steady progress is maintained.—(Mrs.) Lois M. Bruneau, Portland, Oregon.
