Sunday School Notes and Comments
In a Christian Science Sunday School class a teacher asked her pupils to search the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly during the week for some of the rules of Christian Science which they could themselves demonstrate, and to commit them to memory. Among other passages, they selected from the Bible, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," and, "Overcome evil with good;" and from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 261), "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts," and (p. 393), "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good." Their interest was quickened at once, and they became eager to read the entire Lesson.
A teacher asked her class what they considered their greatest gain from the Sunday school. Unhesitatingly they said it was their increasing ability to apply Christian Science to their daily problems. When a pupil finds that Christian Science is applicable to all his problems, and learns how to demonstrate its rules through correct reasoning and realization, he is building a wall of defense against aggressive mental suggestion. And the teacher who conscientiously teaches how to do this finds his own understanding of Truth widening; he learns that giving is having, and the service becomes a twofold blessing.
Another teacher asked each of her pupils to use the Concordances at home or in the Reading Room and to work out a set of references on the Commandments and Beatitudes which they would exchange with her and the other girls in the class. The study of these citations was carried on at home, with only a very brief discussion in class.
