Sunday School Notes and Comments

In thinking of his privilege, purpose, and opportunity as a teacher in the Christian Science Sunday School, one is sure to be inspired by such passages as that on page 165 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," where Mrs. Eddy writes: "Goodness never fails to receive its reward, for goodness makes life a blessing. As an active portion of one stupendous whole, goodness identifies man with universal good. Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing."

Truly we have a "key" to the Scriptures. Take, for instance, Mrs. Eddy's illuminating declaration (Science and Health, p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Only by grasping the spiritually mental nature of prayer can the Biblical injunction to "pray without ceasing" be conceived of as possible of practical compliance.

In teaching, it is of course vital that we have and convey a right understanding of prayer. And here our Leader gives us ample guidance. In Science and Health, in the chapter on Prayer, she says, "Self-forgetfulness, purity, and affection are constant prayers." It is manifestly important that our pupils understand this teaching. Since silent prayer can be utilized at any time, in any place, how important it is to learn how to use it in a practical manner!
