The Principle of Being Is Good

The one and only true basis from which to attain to spiritual consciousness is shown in the first chapter of Genesis, where the nature of God's creation is stated as follows: "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

God, divine Love, having created the universe, designated it as good. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 286): "In the Saxon and twenty other tongues good is the term for God. The Scriptures declare all that He made to be good, like Himself,—good in Principle and in idea. Therefore the spiritual universe is good, and reflects God as He is." It follows in Christian Science that for the attainment of perfection there is required the constant consciousness of good. Thought must be based wholly on the foundation of righteousness.

When we are turning understandingly to our Father-Mother God, our conduct is governed by thoughts that reflect Him; then we may truly say we are becoming spiritually-minded, and in all humility we may declare of our true selfhood that it is "very good." Thus we seek to realize what Paul meant when he said to the Thessalonians, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." Such conduct results from striving to reflect divine Principle, and is manifested in goodness, health, joy, and eternal bliss.
