It is with a deep sense of joy...

It is with a deep sense of joy and gratitude, together with a sincere desire to share with others the many blessings I have received through the study and application of the truth as taught in our beloved textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that I give this testimony.

As a child I attended an orthodox Sunday school and was always interested in the accounts of the healings by Christ Jesus, the prophets, and the apostles, and thought that we could accomplish similar ones if we understood how they were done. My questions along that line were never satisfactorily answered until I turned to Christian Science. When it was first presented to me, however, I was unwilling to accept it, believing it to be the exercise of will power. In the fall of 1911, I became totally blind, and the only hope which specialists could give me was that I might eventually be able to discern between light and darkness.

I was kept in a dark room for several months, and the pain and distress were acute. In May, 1912, while I was pondering and trying to understand why this terrible affliction had been sent to me, as I had been taught to believe it had been, a voice seemed to say very distinctly, "Jesus healed the blind man, and you too can be healed." I then remembered some of the healings through Christian Science about which I had heard. Though my eyes were heavily bandaged and I had not been out alone all this time, I immediately started for the office of a practitioner.
