Through ignorance I used to be...

Through ignorance I used to be greatly prejudiced against Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. In those days I was attending an orthodox Sunday school, and I asked my teacher why we could not have healings like those accomplished by Jesus and his disciples, otherwise why should we study about those healings in our Sunday school lessons. I was informed that those healings were miracles and could be performed only by Jesus or with his help, and that now we must depend on medicine.

A few years after my marriage, and while living in New England, I discovered that my wife was subject to severe headaches. I felt sure that with proper medical treatment they could be overcome, but after a period of about four years, when many remedies, including osteopathic treatments, were tried but with no relief, I became somewhat alarmed, because the trouble grew steadily worse.

A position in New York City was offered me and I accepted it, one reason being that my wife could then consult the leading medical specialists, and this, I felt sure, would bring about a healing. Over a period of about ten years many of this country's leading specialists were consulted and treatments given for many possible causes for the headaches, from anemia to a misplaced vertebra. During the latter part of our residence in New York City, my wife was asked by a young woman to read to her out of a book because she was not feeling well. The book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. While the words meant little to my wife when she read them, she was greatly impressed by the fact that the friend shortly fell asleep and awakened healed.
