Joyous Expression

The Psalmist sang, "In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." Joy is a spiritual quality. It is spiritually sustained and spontaneously expressed. Man coexists with God; therefore man, realizing this spiritual oneness, is always conscious of joy.

Christian Science teaches that man reflects Mind in all the qualities of Spirit. Lack, sorrow, sickness, sin, disease, and death, having no place in divine Mind, cannot be found in man. Therefore, they cannot interfere with the harmony of man, which is intact. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276): "Harmony in man is as real and immortal as in music. Discord is unreal and mortal." Man, reflecting God, expresses perfection, power, and joy continually, and has God-given dominion over all.

Someone may ask, "How can I be joyous and happy when lack and discouragement seem to overwhelm me?" This is just the time for joyous expression. One confronted with a belief of suffering, sorrow, discouragement, or lack has an opportunity to prove his understanding of God as revealed in Christian Science. That which is needed is spiritualization of thought, and lifting thought in gratitude and praise to God brings a perception of God's allness and of man's true being. The realization that thought is unfolding continually in the understanding of divine Truth and Love, gives impulse to the expression of joy.
