Maintaining Our Spiritual Standard of Living
The standard of spiritual living is not determined by material measurements. The Master revealed the Christian standard of living when he said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect;" and he demonstrated spiritual man's perfection as the son of God by healing the sick, destroying sin, feeding the multitude, and raising the dead.
The central truth, the very foundation of Christian Science, as taught by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, is the absolute perfection of God, creative divine Mind, and of man, His spiritual image and likeness. Our Leader writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 470): "The standard of perfection was originally God and man. Has God taken down His own standard, and has man fallen?" Man, the spiritual idea of God, has never fallen. He is perfect eternally. The divine standard of Life can never be lowered. Perfection can never be less than perfect.
Of what practical value is this spiritual standard of perfection in a world of seeming economic, political, and social uncertainty? some may ask. Truth is practical. Science is practical. All scientific demonstration is necessarily from the standpoint of absolute Truth. Truth heals. Understanding, based upon Principle, manifests the power of Truth. When thought is tested by this fundamental standard, the spurious belief is detected and rejected. Suggestions of lack, limitation, sickness, or sin find no room in the consciousness which is filled with spiritual ideas. Christianly scientific thinking results in the healing of sickness, the correction of mistakes, and harmony in daily living.
