It is with gratitude of the utmost...
It is with gratitude of the utmost sincerity for some knowledge of Christian Science, gained during fifteen years, that I give this testimony. I cannot contemplate what life would be without Science.
My father was a veterinary surgeon, and I, too, have devoted the whole of my life to the welfare of animals and the alleviation of their sufferings. Consequently, during the early days of my study of Christian Science, the healing of disease by its ministrations was most helpful as a demonstrable proof of its theory, which I studied critically, but also with an unbiased thought, and which I found to be both logical and scientific.
In connection with animals I have witnessed the power of Truth over error to heal acute and serious cases of illness, such as distemper of all forms, and also the effects of serious street accidents. Here the statement on page 550 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy is so wonderful in its application: "God is the Life, or intelligence, which forms and preserves the individuality and identity of animals as well as of men."
My wife and two children are also students of Christian Science, and have experienced God's power to destroy serious illnesses, such as asthma, appendicitis, and effects of accidents.
My personal experience has been chiefly one of gratitude for the realization of the omnipresence and omnipotence of divine Love to preserve me from illness, and for the discovery of a happy and satisfying way of life. Specifically I would mention the healing of a badly sprained ankle late one night. I awoke next morning unable to stand, but after my wife and I had done an hour's metaphysical work, I was able to drive my car two hundred and thirty miles. I was able to carry on normally after that, except for a slight lameness. This was an interesting healing to me, because years before, when I knew nothing of Christian Science, a similar accident necessitated a month's rest, followed by the use of a walking stick for a period.
Another interesting demonstration of the power of Truth was the healing of an acutely inflamed and infected finger. The condition appeared to be unyielding and mortification seemed to be setting in, until a practitioner's help was requested. Then, when she said that mortification is but the seeming reverse of glorification, the healing instantly became apparent. I have found that when a healing seems to be slow it gives one opportunity to gain a more effectual knowledge of God's love, and thus to find, when demonstration has been established, that one is more firmly settled and confident.
Christian Science enabled me to find a new situation when I was in need of one. With the help of practitioners I knew more and more definitely as time went on that God was the true source of supply for my family as well as for myself, and at the right time, when my moral outlook became clearer, the new post came along in an unlooked-for manner.
The authorized literature and the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly are our sustenance and joy, for which we cannot sufficiently express our thankfulness. As experience grows, one cannot help being increasingly grateful for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower; for Mrs. Eddy, our Leader; and for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church with the attendant blessings that it brings.—Frederick J. Richmond, Hackbridge, Surrey, England.
