The Haven of Home
Mary Baker Eddy , the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," gives a broad view and a sound basis for home building, where she says (p. 58), "Home is the dearest spot on earth, and it should be the centre, though not the boundary, of the affections." Established on the foundation of Truth, home offers to the Christian Scientist the true sense of security and permanency which is to be found in the government of Mind. The student knows that it is his duty and privilege to establish in his own consciousness the highest concept of that which is good and true. Right desires and spiritual ideas, unfolding in human experience, will correct erroneous conditions, destroy sin, and heal disease.
The silent affirmation of Truth is often a greater factor for healing than the spoken word. Our beloved Leader says (Science and Health, p. 71): "Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing." The errors that seem to be manifested by individuals, and that would, if they could, disrupt a home and all that it stands for, are but wrong mental concepts, beliefs of evil accepted as real. A condition such as this is healed by the realization of man as the true expression or reflection of Mind.
The materialistic concept of home as based upon matter and material conditions is built upon the sand. With such a foundation, home may become a place for the expression of jealousy and selfishness, discord and disorder. Gratification of the senses is given first consideration. It may be thought that social drinking and smoking are needed to round out the freedom and liberty of home privileges. Excitement and entertainment based on a false sense of pleasure have no foundation in Truth, and their indulgence is harmful. Higher aims and ambitions are needed to bring out and establish that which is good and true.
