The Understanding of Spiritual Being

To the great majority of mortals, Deity seems an enigma, a mystery. They are asked to believe in God without understanding Him; indeed, He seems vague and distant, indifferent to human miseries and apparently incapable of relieving them. Those who fail to comprehend God do not know the resources and benefits which a right understanding of Him brings. They continue to stumble in the dark labyrinth of human beliefs, from which they are unable to extricate themselves because they can find no guide to lead them to light and liberty.

The true understanding of God is not the privilege of a chosen few; it is within the reach of all who wish earnestly to study the Scriptures and the truths taught by Christian Science.

The first two Commandments, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," and, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them," point to the only God, or Supreme Being. Moreover, these Commandments indicate the true nature of Deity and inevitably lead thought to the comprehension of the incorporeal nature of the one God. If we adore a false, finite, circumscribed concept of God, we are disobeying the Commandments.
