Abraham Lincoln remains the best interpreter of democracy for Americans. The "four score and seven years ago" of which he spoke in his Gettysburg address have nearly doubled, and the nation "conceived in liberty" and dedicated to equality still carries on.

But once more we are in troublous times. The whole world now seems to be engaged in a great war, testing whether any nation committed to freedom can endure. Out of all the nations of the earth there are only two strong democracies left, and one of them is fighting desperately not only for its free way of life, but for life itself. ...
