When the thought first came to me to write a testimony...
When the thought first came to me to write a testimony expressing my gratitude for Christian Science, I hesitated to do so because the argument that I had had no sufficiently outstanding healings presented itself. However, in thinking back over the changes in my life since I accepted Christian Science, I suddenly realized that I have indeed risen "into newness of life with regeneration" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 24). The change has come so gradually that I scarcely recognized how I was changing, but now I can see, in place of the old self—seeking pleasure only in material things, believing freedom is found in social drinking and smoking, and staying away from anything of a religious nature—a new self, humbly striving to learn more of Truth. This new self has learned that real freedom is gained by accepting man's God-given right to dominion, and that this means gaining dominion over a false sense of self.
From the fullness of her wisdom and experience, Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 450): "Some people yield slowly to the touch of Truth. Few yield without a struggle, and many are reluctant to acknowledge that they have yielded; but unless this admission is made, evil will boast itself above good." Although I was healed in Science, through the help of a practitioner, over eight years ago, I did not acknowledge the healing immediately, and it was not until three or four years later that I began to study and apply Christian Science. Even then I was filled with doubts and arguments. I can never be grateful enough to the loving practitioner who patiently and satisfyingly answered my many questions.
I am more grateful every day for church membership, for in the three years that I have been active in the church I have made the most progress. I am especially grateful for the privilege of teaching in the Sunday school, because in teaching and giving I am also learning. Above all, I am grateful that Mrs. Eddy was inspired to discover the Christhealing and to illumine the Bible for us through Science and Health.—(Miss) Helen Brulle, Baltimore, Maryland.
