Spiritual Resources
IN "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul." It is clear that through the understanding of God the joy of service, the capacity for industry and cooperation, integrity, originality, faith, wisdom, gratitude, and teachableness are all available, and that their development benefits not only ourselves, but others. Being infinite, the resources of Soul are inexhaustible, ever available; being of God, they are not inherent in mortal mind, dependent upon matter, or subject to decay.
Much time and energy is spent in developing material resources, which may be used destructively as well as constructively; but the great need is to know God and the eternal verities of Spirit, that men may be clothed and fed with spiritual truth. They need spiritual understanding in order that they may become aware of the great facts of Life, God, and of man's relationship to Him. Those who have sought in Christian Science these immortal facts, thus gaining spiritual enlightenment, have discovered that in this way they have been utilizing the resources of Soul, the effect of which has been to bring harmony into their experience.
On page 128 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes: "The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man. From this it follows that business men and cultured scholars have found that Christian Science enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity." And she adds: "A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man. It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms. It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity." Thus, by assisting men and women in the development of spiritual resources, Christian Science is rendering mankind an inestimable service.
