Claiming the Boon of Spirituality

The need wherever there is a need, Christian Scientists know, is for spiritualization of thought and life—for clearer recognition that being is Spirit, not touched by matter or material concepts. "Who knows how the feeble lips are made eloquent, how hearts are inspired, how healing becomes spontaneous, and how the divine Mind is understood and demonstrated?" Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 100, 101). She continues, "He alone knows these wonders who is departing from the thraldom of the senses and accepting spiritual truth,—that which blesses its adoption by the refinement of joy and the dismissal of sorrow." And Christ Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." Christian Science shows that all good is to be achieved—is to be perceived and demonstrated—through spirituality, and that no authentic and lasting good is to be experienced in any other way.

What does it mean, then, to spiritualize our thought and life? There is no mystery about it in Science. The answer is indicated in those great key passages in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, in which God is defined. One of them (p. 465) reads: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." "Are these terms synonymous?" the author asks. And she answers, "They are."

Spirit, we learn from this passage, is another name for God, and therefore another name for Love, Truth, Mind, and so on. Spirit, then, is Love. It follows that a thought more loving—more unselfish and impartial, more like infinite divine Love—is a thought more spiritual. To maintain such thoughts and reject their opposites, such as hatred, envy, irritation, unkindness, and indifference, is in the truly scientific manner to spiritualize consciousness. It is consciously to take to oneself true spirituality, and therefore true power, freedom, and life. For all these combine in the expression of Spirit.
