I had been afflicted with asthma from birth, and at times...
I had been afflicted with asthma from birth, and at times it was severe enough to keep me in a chair day and night for long periods. Through my babyhood, boyhood, and young manhood, my distracted parents labored and worried with me, doing everything in their power materially to help me, but, from observation of similar cases, all finally settled down to the conviction that I was doomed.
My wife and I were in Klamath Falls, Oregon, when I became ill with double pneumonia. With these two conditions together, it seemed that the acme of human suffering had been reached. The doctor recommended that I be taken to a high altitude as soon as I could be moved, to relieve the asthma. About this time a Frenchwoman made a business call on me, but on seeing me she forgot her errand and began to tell us about Christian Science. I had heard of it before, but my knowledge was limited to a famous writer's caricature and a few flat jokes. We listened open-eyedly, for my need was very great. She told us that she had had a very large tumor, and that an attempted operation had proved impossible. She had then been told of Christian Science, and a book had been lent to her, but her husband had scoffed at it and refused to read it to her (she could not read English). Finally he did so, however, and in six weeks she was of normal size and completely healed.
The next day I got up, to the amazement of my wife and the doctor, and congratulated him on his efficiency, not yet recognizing the angel which had been sent in that testimony. In three days we obediently started for a high altitude, going sixty miles in a lumber wagon to the railroad station, and from there to Leadville, Colorado. Just before we left we met a man who pressed his own copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy upon us. I kept it and read it for three months before I was able to purchase one and return his. The healing of pneumonia was very quick, but the healing of asthma took several years. Other diseases went first—bladder, liver, and stomach trouble—then one day my wife informed me I had had no asthma for two years. I could hardly believe this at first, but finally had to admit my healing was complete.
