"Having eyes, see ye not?"

In Proverbs we read, "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." Sight, then, is a faculty of Mind. It is a spiritual quality, not to be found in matter; nor is it under the control of so-called mortal mind.

On page 586 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is found the following definition of "eyes": "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental." Webster's dictionary defines "spiritual" as follows: "Of, or consisting of, spirit; incorporeal." And "discernment" as, "Quickness and accuracy in discriminating." Spiritual discernment, then, is quickness or accuracy in understanding the things of Spirit.

How is this discernment to be gained? By studying the Word of God and the writings of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. We need to study daily the Lesson-Sermon, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, to amplify and ponder its statements. In order to discern spiritually we must abandon self-seeking, and become as little children, meek and humble before God. In her writings, Mrs. Eddy has emphasized the need for humility. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 354) she says, "Experience shows that humility is the first step in Christian Science, wherein all is controlled, not by man or laws material, but by wisdom, Truth, and Love." On page 356, referring again to humility, she writes, "This virtue triumphs over the flesh; it is the genius of Christian Science." When we learn to express the quality of humility, then self-righteousness, self-conceit, ignorance, and pride will proportionately disappear.
