About the year 1890, my grandfather, who then lived in California, was suffering from a very sore knee. No one seemed to know just what caused this soreness or to be able to help him. A friend, having heard of Christian Science, jokingly suggested that he try this "new cure." He went to the only Christian Science practitioner near by, and at the end of his first visit walked out of the practitioner's office healed. Being curious to know what had healed him, he bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. He read the book through and then placed it among his other books and thought little more of it.
It was not until I was twelve years old that I heard of Christian Science. My father, who was ill at that time, began to read Science and Health and read it continuously; he could not get enough of it. In two weeks he looked like a new man, and in that time I had seen him sit beside my sister's bed, where she lay with a sore throat, and give her a Christian Science treatment. She had suffered from these attacks since birth, and it was believed that she would always be subject to them. However, when she awakened after this treatment, she was healed, and I have never heard of her having a similar attack since. During this time my mother injured a finger badly. She showed it to my father and asked if he could help her. Much to her surprise, the next day the finger not only felt all right, but showed no sign of having been hurt.
At this time I had little use for what I believed God to be. I had developed a bad cough, which I was told was caused by tuberculosis, and a very painful spinal condition made walking far from pleasant. Although I did not feel that Christian Science could help me, my father had said that its textbook contained the truth, and I started to read Science and Health, hoping to find in it something to prove the existence of God.
