Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 30, 1941.]

"They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth" (Ps. 73:9)—The thought of the verse is well expressed in Moffatt's translation, where we read: "Lofty as heaven itself their speech, lording it over the world below."

"They make you vain" (Jer. 23:16)—The Hebrew phrase which is thus translated could also be rendered, "They make fools of you," or, "They befool you," as Feyerabend suggests. Smith renders: "They fill you with vain hopes;" while Moffatt has: "They fill you up with idle hopes."

"They speak a vision of their own heart" (Jer. 23:16)—Streane observes that "of their own heart" means "devised by themselves, the heart being considered as the seat of the intellect. Hence the expression does not mean, in accordance with their own wishes, however true that was" (Commentary on Jeremiah, p. 163).
