At a very early age I became addicted to tobacco, and a little later to liquor in a deplorable degree. When twenty years of age I took a drastic material course of treatment for the cure of the habit. The complete futility of this effort only attested to what I later learned, that God is the only healer, "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."

For many years this bondage was a blight to my life, becoming in time periodic. Over twenty-five years ago I started to attend Christian Science services and to study its teachings in a dilatory manner. Besides removing my pessimistic views on religion, it changed my routine of living. For many years I had been irregularly employed; now I started a business with no credit, very little cash, and apparently at an adverse time. This enterprise was extraordinarily successful.

I quit profanity and the use of medicine, and also felt that Christian Science would sometime deliver me from my miserable bondage. After a time I was helped to the extent that I was able to control the liquor desire until the termination of this business.
