My mother started studying Christian Science in 1914,...
My mother started studying Christian Science in 1914, and at her insistence I took our son, a child of about two and a half years, to a Christian Science practitioner. We had been using various material methods with him in the endeavor to overcome what seemed to be a constriction of the bowels. I knew nothing about Christian Science, and was somewhat skeptical as to what it could do. Although I believed my prayers were answered in a great many ways, I had not considered praying for the overcoming of physical difficulties. I told the practitioner what the trouble was, and she said she would give him a treatment. She closed her eyes, and I closed mine and repeated the Lord's Prayer. Shortly she told me she was sure everything would be all right. The next day the child proved to be completely healed.
About five years later, when we were living in a city where I knew no one, this child developed a rupture. I went to a Christian Science Reading Room, where I was shown the list of practitioners in The Christian Science Journal and directed to a church. It was two or more years before this healing was completely accomplished. However, our two children were placed in the Sunday school, and I began regular attendance at the church services. The systematic reading of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and of the other literature followed, and through the twenty-one years since, many and varied types of healing have occurred, mental, physical, and financial.
I have seen acute pain healed instantaneously and chronic conditions disappear, when the correct view of man as the image of God has been gained. I have seen protection from contagious diseases experienced by our two children, and their healing of the susceptibility to colds and coughs. An internal misplacement was rectified, after a doctor had said an operation would be necessary to overcome the difficulty. This healing followed the realization that the same infinite power and Love which holds the planets in their orbits and governs their activity, governs and controls me.
