Your correspondent, "Churchman," challenges the statement made at the recent lecture on Christian Science that Christian Science is based upon the Bible. Those who have investigated the teachings of Christian Science with an open mind and who have experienced the healing effects of these teachings are very certain that its basis is the Bible.

With reference to the criticism of Christian Science teaching in regard to the divinity of the Christ, your correspondent is misinformed. Christian Scientists do believe in the divinity of the Christ; and what is more, they find that this fact can be demonstrated. Any sincere investigator may gain a clear understanding of the Christ by the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 333, 334). To quote just one passage (p. 333): "Christ expresses God's spiritual, eternal nature. The name is synonymous with Messiah, and alludes to the spirituality which is taught, illustrated, and demonstrated in the life of which Christ Jesus was the embodiment."
