When I first began to inquire into the teachings of Christian Science...
When I first began to inquire into the teachings of Christian Science, though I liked the articles in the Christian Science Sentinel, I did not care to read the testimonies. However, it was not long before this false sense gave way to an eager turning to them when the periodicals arrived, and to appreciation of the writers' victories over difficulties in many cases similar to those confronting me.
Christian Science came into my life while I was on a visit to England from my then home in South Africa, about twenty years ago. I had always been delicate, had had many doctors and taken much medicine, but for some years had not known what it was to feel really well. I led an active life, but was hardly ever free from pain and weariness. Prior to leaving home, I felt so poorly that my husband wanted to cancel my passage, for he did not think I was fit to travel alone. However, I did go, but for months was not well, and a doctor friend to whom I told my difficulties said that an operation should be performed.
At this point I decided to try Christian Science. I knew little or nothing about it, but had, before leaving South Africa, been impressed by the altered outlook and better health of a friend, which she told me were due to Christian Science. Then I was invited to the house of a Christian Scientist. I was much interested by what she told me of her religion. An appointment was made with a practitioner, and at the end of three week's treatment, though I was not completely healed, several symptoms had abated, and I felt more confident in good and harmony as alone real. Christian Science appealed to me as the most logical religion I had known.
