Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 233 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Ye who can discern the face of the sky,—the sign material,—how much more should ye discern the sign mental, and compass the destruction of sin and sickness by overcoming the thoughts which produce them, and by understanding the spiritual idea which corrects and destroys them."

Every summer, for a number of years, I experienced an attack of hay fever. With the help of practitioners, and much study and work on my own part, the malady became less severe and its duration shorter; nevertheless, when the time of year arrived in which hay fever supposedly causes distress, I was again victimized by this illness, for I had much fear of it.

In the summer of 1936, when the suggestion of suffering from this erroneous condition again presented itself, I considered the situation and saw that hay fever was a condition of irritation, so I examined my thinking in accordance with the admonition quoted above from Science and Health and discovered that I was almost constantly in a state of suppressed irritability because of the heat, for the city where I was then residing was exceedingly hot in summer. I resolved immediately to change my thought. Through my holding to the truth that because God is Love and all His creation reflects Love, there can be nothing to express or to cause irritation, this condition was overcome in a few weeks, and by continuing to keep this thought in my consciousness, I have since been free from this error.
