Spiritual Striving

In the first chapter of Genesis, and in the opening verses of the second chapter, we find the true record of creation set forth. Herein we are told that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Later we read, "And he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, based her discovery on the inspiration and revelation she had gained from her consecrated study of the sacred Scriptures. As earnest students of Christian Science we need to keep close to the path wherein she trod, in order that we too may understand and glorify God through the demonstration of spiritual truth.

On page 10 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written: "Seeking is not sufficient. It is striving that enables us to enter. Spiritual attainments open the door to a higher understanding of the divine Life." In this statement our revered Leader shows us the need for striving, in order that we may forward our growth Spiritward. Christian Science teaches that this striving must be spiritual. In the clear light which it sheds on the Scriptures, we perceive the unreality of erroneous concepts as they appear in our experience. We learn to disregard the testimony of material sense and to contemplate, instead, the eternal verities of Spirit. This consecrated endeavor to understand God's creation as it really is—spiritual, perfect, and immortal—constitutes our striving.
