The New Birth

"How can a man be born when he is old?"
Said Nicodemus, who had come to find
The secret of the miracles on blind
And dumb and sick folk, and would fain behold
Strange works of power; but straightly he was told
He must be born of Spirit, and designed
To heavenly purpose—never to the mind
Of flesh do God's high purposes unfold.
And Nicodemus listened on that night
To sayings deeper than his earthly eyes
Could pierce, or thought as yet could realize,
Of birth into the kingdom—dawning light
Of paths immortal up to heights untrod
That lead on to the consciousness of God.
